Asking yes or no questions can really hurt you on the sales floor:

Salesperson: Can I help You?
Customer: No.

On the other hand, when you ask open ended questions you get back useful information:

Salesperson: What brings you in to the store today?
Customer: Witty response that gives you insight into what they need.
