Hockey fights are great. It's hard to explain to a non-hockey fan the role they play in the game and why they are necessary. One purpose is for the combatants to energize their teammates and fans.
You will often see a fight when a team needs to change the momentum. Maybe they just went down by two goals. Maybe their team looks like it is sleeping on the bench. Perhaps the fans are quieter than a librarian convention.
Look at the crowd, and the benches, when a fight breaks out. Everyone is on their feet yelling, cheering and getting their blood pumping.
Maybe you can't drop the gloves and punch someone in the head, but sometimes you have to do something similar to change the momentum and get people's attention.
